If you're the Microsoft 365 admin of an Office for business plan, users in your organization can only install Office using the steps in this topic as long as your plan includes the desktop version of Office, and you've assigned the user a license and given them permission to install Office (Manage software download settings in Microsoft 365).
Note for Mac users: Office 365 ProPlus allows you to install Microsoft Office 2016 only if you have OS X 10.10 or later. After installing Microsoft Office 2016, your Microsoft Office 2011 applications (if previously installed) will still exist in Applications in a folder titled Microsoft Office 2011.
- Using Outlook on the web (webmail.stanford.edu), click the app launcher in the upper left-hand corner and then click Office 365.
- Click Install Office > Office 365 apps.
Note: Office 365 ProPlus includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. Office 365 ProPlus for Windows also includes Access, Publisher, and OneDrive for Business. - A file downloads to your computer. Once the file has finished downloading, click the file and go through the installation steps.
This screen shot shows the Windows instructions. Mac instructions are similar but slightly different. - After Office 365 ProPlus has finished installing you need to sign in to Office with your Stanford Office 365 account.
Office 365 For Mac Review
- Windows: Click Start > My Office. Open any app (e.g., Word), click Accept and start <program name>.
- Mac: Open your Applications folder and click a Microsoft app (e.g., Microsoft Word.app). In the application name menu (e.g., Word) click Activate Office. Sign in with your Stanford email address and click Next. Authenticate using two-step authentication.

Download the installer package file to your local network, and then use your software distribution tools to deploy Office for Mac to your users. If you have an Office 365 (or Microsoft 365) plan, you can provide your users with instructions on how to download and install Office for Mac for themselves. To install Office for Mac, a user has to be administrator on the Mac or know an administrator account name. Students and educators at eligible institutions can sign up for Office 365 Education for free, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and now Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools. To download and install the software
- Log into UTmail+ via a web browser.
- Click your user icon and choose My account.
- In the My Account tab, click Install Office.
- You will be prompted to save the Microsoft Office Installer file. It will be saved to your Downloads folder.
- Open the .pkg file to start the installation.
- Click Continue in each screen to progress through the installation options.
- Read the License Agreement and click Agree.
- At the Installation Type screen, click Install.
- At the security prompt, enter your Macintosh's password and click Install Software to continue.
- When it's finished, click Close.
- Word will autolaunch. Click Get Started.
- Click Sign In.
- Enter your U of T email address and click Next.
- You will see the Weblogin screen. Type your UTORid and password and click Log in.
- Office will activate and you will see a screen where you can choose how Office will look. Click Continue.
- Click Start Using Word.
Note: When launching another Office app for the first time, you will see a window requesting to use your 'Microsoft Identity' information. Click Always Allow.
